Burnley 1 MUFC 0

United are normally sluggish starters and give Chelsea a few points lead at the start of a season. It helps to make things interesting later on.

And so it proved at Turf  Moor where newly promoted Burnley won 1-0 with a spectacular volley from Robbie Blake.

United created enough chances but didn’t take them. Maybe it was just a bad day at the office.

It certainly was for Michael Carrick. He gave the ball away on the move leading up to their goal, he didn’t close down Blake to prevent his piledriver. To compound his misery, he then had a first half penalty saved.

Evra played well and Owen missed (another) couple of half-chances and looks a little rusty. Still, what do you expect after 4 years at Newcastle ?

Puzzled that Rooney didn’t take the penalty – doesn’t he want his 100th goal for United ? Mind you, recent penalties from United have been quite laughable (Berbatov in Carling Cup, Gigs and Evra in the Community Shield). Embarassing, in fact.

Rooney kept trying but, as always, when things don’t go his way, lost his temper and was lucky not to be sent off for a waist high ‘tackle’.

Burnley played football, didn’t try to kick us off the pitch and I hope they stay up.
