Wigan 0 MUFC 5

United responded to Ferguson’s call to the strikers to take their chances and not be so frivolous in front of goal by squandering a load of first half chances at Wigan.

Darren Fletcher and Paul Scholes wasted chances and with the score goalless at half-time, thoughts turned back to Burnley.

Fortunately, Rooney scored his 100th goal for the club with a well-taken header from a Valencia cross after half-time which opened the flood-gates.

The languid, fluid Berbatov juggled the ball and netted the second and Rooney screwed in a shot at the near post.

Michael Owen came on for his third appearance and the media sighed as he scored the fourth with a well-taken finish from a great ball from Nani.

Nani then completed the rout with an injury time free-kick.
